Our objective is to promote
the economic and safe functionality of route 329 and trunk
route 3 to motorists and non-motorists. The results of improving
the loop-roadway are expected to contribute to:

life.
b.) significant economic benefits, especially cycle-tourism.
c.) active living and transport options to assist the provincial
priorities of fitness, health, and safety.
|
Objectives:
- To advocate for the improvement of the road’s
safety for all users, motorized and non-motorized, by
- lobbying government for better attention to road
design and maintenance to accommodate the “share
the road” philosophy; and
- educating users about road sharing skills and
strategy.
- To promote sustainable, healthy transportation choices
for residents through education and advertisement.
- To stimulate economic benefits of active tourism for
local business, by encouraging “slow down to see
the world” ideals for all ages.
- To encourage sustainable rural community values through
shared use of the roadway.
- To serve as a model for other active travel community
developments.
- To foster partnerships with other cycling and community
advocates.
Goals:
- Route assessment, map creation, and plan of action.
- Identification of the loop as a recognized cycling route, through
signs in Hubbards and East Chester.
- Advertising in local newspapers.
- Health promotion campaign: Distribution of literature promoting
The Loop as an active traveler’s destination, and a community
that encourages active living.
- Cyclists/walkers welcome signs at businesses and key points.
- Improved shoulder maintenance.
- Sidewalks and bike lanes in Hubbards and Mill Cove to connect homes
with schools.
- Rest stops with picnic tables at appropriate intervals.
- Wide paved shoulders with lane dedicated to active transport, where
a quiet alternative does not already exist.

Drivers and Cyclists Can Safely
Share the Road |
Drivers
- Bicycles have the same rights as other vehicles on the
road
- Be aware of cyclists’ vulnerability and limitations
- Overtake cyclists when safe to do so, at least one meter
away
- Check for cyclists before opening your car door, and
avoid a nasty collision
- Do not pass and cut right; cyclists actually travel
faster than cars slowing to turn
- When turning left, wait for oncoming bicycles before
turning
- In your larger and heavier vehicle, you must take more
responsibility for safety.
|
Cyclists
- Bicycles are vehicles, and must ride on the right, at
a safe distance from road edge
- Ride in single file, as straight as possible
- Obey all traffic signs
- Indicate turns with arm signals
- Ride at least one meter from parked cars
- Do not overtake cars on the right
- Wear bright clothes
- Use lights in poor visibility
- Pull over periodically if you are holding up traffic
