Our objective is to promote the economic and safe functionality of route 329 and trunk route 3 to motorists and non-motorists. The results of improving the loop-roadway are expected to contribute to:

a.) sustainable community life.
b.) significant economic benefits, especially cycle-tourism.
c.) active living and transport options to assist the provincial priorities of fitness, health, and safety.

Objectives:

  1. To advocate for the improvement of the road’s safety for all users, motorized and non-motorized, by
      1. lobbying government for better attention to road design and maintenance to accommodate the “share the road” philosophy; and
      2. educating users about road sharing skills and strategy.
  2. To promote sustainable, healthy transportation choices for residents through education and advertisement.
  3. To stimulate economic benefits of active tourism for local business, by encouraging “slow down to see the world” ideals for all ages.
  4. To encourage sustainable rural community values through shared use of the roadway.
  5. To serve as a model for other active travel community developments.
  6. To foster partnerships with other cycling and community advocates.

Goals:

  1. Route assessment, map creation, and plan of action.
  2. Identification of the loop as a recognized cycling route, through signs in Hubbards and East Chester.
  3. Advertising in local newspapers.
  4. Health promotion campaign: Distribution of literature promoting The Loop as an active traveler’s destination, and a community that encourages active living.
  5. Cyclists/walkers welcome signs at businesses and key points.
  6. Improved shoulder maintenance.
  7. Sidewalks and bike lanes in Hubbards and Mill Cove to connect homes with schools.
  8. Rest stops with picnic tables at appropriate intervals.
  9. Wide paved shoulders with lane dedicated to active transport, where a quiet alternative does not already exist.
Drivers and Cyclists Can Safely Share the Road

Drivers

  1. Bicycles have the same rights as other vehicles on the road
  2. Be aware of cyclists’ vulnerability and limitations
  3. Overtake cyclists when safe to do so, at least one meter away
  4. Check for cyclists before opening your car door, and avoid a nasty collision
  5. Do not pass and cut right; cyclists actually travel faster than cars slowing to turn
  6. When turning left, wait for oncoming bicycles before turning
  7. In your larger and heavier vehicle, you must take more responsibility for safety.

Cyclists

  1. Bicycles are vehicles, and must ride on the right, at a safe distance from road edge
  2. Ride in single file, as straight as possible
  3. Obey all traffic signs
  4. Indicate turns with arm signals
  5. Ride at least one meter from parked cars
  6. Do not overtake cars on the right
  7. Wear bright clothes
  8. Use lights in poor visibility
  9. Pull over periodically if you are holding up traffic
